Edward Holly, Musical Director
The late Eugene Mooney appointed Edward Holly to succeed him as Musical Director of St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir in 1996. Edward continued to guide the choir to competitive successes of previous years, winning every male voice choral festival in Ireland within three years. These successes included the Sligo International Choral Festival and Irish Choir of the Year awards.
As well as leading St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir to performances in Europe and the USA, Edward has directed the production of the choir’s two CDs, ‘The Awakening’ and ‘So this is Christmas’. To date, 5,000 albums have been sold, as well as 8,000 downloads on iTunes.
Edward produced his first Christmas Concert with the choir in St. Peter’s Church of Ireland in 2001. These annual sell out Christmas shows were staged in the church for 10 years. For several years now Edward has collaborated with his colleague Paul O’Brien writing over one hundred arrangements specifically for male ensemble together.
Edward Holly studied piano with Frank Heneghan at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin and subsequently with Professor Christopher Elton (Head of Keyboard, Royal Academy of Music, London). He graduated from Trinity College and the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama with an honours Bachelor in Music Performance Degree (1992). Edward received an honours Masters’s Degree in Music Performance from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (1997) and holds a Masters in Philosophy in Music and Media Technologies from Trinity College Dublin (2002).
As a solo pianist, Edward has achieved numerous first prizes for repertoire playing in Feis Ceoil and Feis Mhaitiú. He has performed Ireland’s major recital venues, broadcast on RTÉ Television and Radio and given recitals in the Moscow Conservatory and Moscow State University, Russia. His career as a solo pianist has also taken him to Italy, America and England. Edward has performed as piano soloist with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and conducted the Orchestra with St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir for the sell out ‘Songs of the Beatles’ production, which he arranged and produced with Paul O’Brien in May 2011.
Edward is an official piano accompanist for Feis Ceoil and is also répétiteur for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Performance students at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. Other projects include working for RTÉ for The Peacemakers by Karl Jenkins and the recent performance of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in the O2. He also performed for masterclasses by Classical Brit award winning trumpeter Alison Balsom, which was filmed for the South Bank Show. Last June Edward accompanied International Bass Baritone Bryn Terfel in the National Concert Hall, Dublin.
Edward celebrated his twentieth anniversary as a choral conductor in 2012.
