St. Peter's Male Voice Choir raises over €2,000 for St. Vincent de Paul, Drogheda
A wonderful evening of music and song was performed to a delighted and full Droichead Arts Centre audience on Saturday 27th September as St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir, Drogheda and Musical Director Edward Holly presented their ‘Forever Autumn’ concert with guest soprano Niamh McCormack and accompanist Klara Bolger. The fun but professional concert was in aid of St. Vincent de Paul and it was their representative Mr. Joe Sweeney who began proceedings by thanking the choir for their generosity and time and the audience for all their support. Mr. Sweeney also spoke of the dear, historical love the people of Drogheda has for St. Peter's Male Voice Choir.
The wide range of amazing performances included a solo début by Allan Clarke who sang ‘Karma Police’, founder choir members Oliver Plunkett and Jim Balfe showed their wonderful vocal talents with 'And I Love You So' and 'Ol' Man River' respectively. Another solo débutant was Jim Lambe who sang 'She's a Mystery to Me' with Séan Tester performing backing that he himself had arranged. It was a night also for reminiscing with the choir celebrating the tenth anniversary of their CD 'The Awakening' and they performed some tracks from the album. Edward proudly reflected that it was in this very theatre that the late Eugene Mooney handed over to him the Musical Directorship of St. Peter's Male Voice Choir.
The choir premiered six new pieces from its ever-increasing repertoire and the audience was left spellbound with their perfect a cappella harmonies. 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' featured solo parts by Seán Tester and Liam Kelly and it was so mesmerising that some present were trying to applaud before the song had even finished! As the choir made ready to leave the stage after performing the legendary 'You'll Never Walk Alone' they were stopped in their tracks by the demands from the audience to sing one more song which they gladly obliged with the The Turtles’ 'Happy Together'.
St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir extended a huge thank you to Erin Frames, Scholars Townhouse Hotel and Angel Hair who generously sponsored the event. St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir’s legendary Christmas Concerts have been running since 2001 and the new show titled ‘Christmas Memories’ and takes place in the TLT Theatre on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th December. Tickets are now on sale.
